He also learns the fate of his brother Guddu, who was hit and killed by an oncoming train the night of his separation. Saroo's mother never gave up hope nor moved away from the village as she believed that one day her missing son would return home. The film ends with captions about the real Saroo's return to India in February 2012. Photos of the real Australian family are shown, as well as footage of Saroo introducing Sue to his biological mother in India, who deeply appreciates Sue's care for her son. Saroo later learned that he had been mispronouncing his own name for all those years, which was actually Sheru, meaning "lion". The first half follows the imperiled Saroo as a young boy who finds himself lost in the urban nightmare of Calcutta, thousands of kilometres from home.
In 1986, Saroo, a five-year-old boy, lives with his elder brother Guddu, his mother and his younger baby sister in Khandwa, India. Guddu and Saroo steal coal from freight trains to trade for milk and food. One night Saroo pesters his brother who is going to work overnight to let him come too. Guddu refuses at first yet finally relents, and they arrive at a nearby train station where Saroo is too tired to stay awake. Guddu places Saroo on a bench and tells him to wait for his return. Saroo promptly falls asleep and when he wakes up Guddu is not there.

The couple welcomed daughter Faith Margaret on Dec. 28, 2010, in Nashville. Faith was born via surrogate, and the couple chose to keep the pregnancy private. Kidman and Urban enjoyed a low-key night on the town to celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary, sharing a romantic dinner at Nashville restaurant Flyte.
It is an effective, pleasurably melodramatic film – I challenge anyone to see it without reaching for the tissue box. The performances are excellent, with 8-year old Pawar, lighting every scene with his delightful smile, the standout. The photography balances beautiful, epic shots of the Indian and Tasmanian landscapes with pathos-laden close-ups of the main characters. The score by Volker Bertelmann and Dustin O'Halloran is emotively symphonic without a surplus of schmaltz. Despite the length of the film, the construction of the story is economic enough to maintain the viewer’s interest throughout. You go into this movie pretty much knowing how it is going to end, but it still takes hold of you.

Saroo searches the station for Guddu and gets on an empty train looking for him. Lion is one of those movies and more so, it is one of the best movies of 2016. It is the heartwarming film that friends and critics alike have fallen in love with and told you to go see. It has earned Best Picture nominations at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards, as well as two nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. And yet, Lion, which is now in theaters, hasn't taken home a trophy at any of these high-profile award shows. Now up for six Academy Awards later this month, including a nomination for Best Picture, the film may still go home empty-handed, despite critical acclaim and standout performances by Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman.
Five year old Saroo gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of miles across India, away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.
"I think it's knowing that you have to keep contributing to what we call the 'us.' You go, 'Does this work for us?' " she said. "When you make an us, it's yours together — that's what you create." The actress and the country music star both grew up in Australia, but they didn't cross paths until they were adults on the other side of the world. The pair had an instant attraction when they first met at a gala in 2005 and eventually wed the following year. In Australia, it opened at number one with $3.18 million, the biggest opening ever for an Australian indie film, and the fifth biggest debut for an Australian film overall. It grossed $29.6 million, becoming the fifth highest-grossing Australian film ever at the Australian box office.
For long stretches, Saroo is quiet and disconnected, unable to even understand the people around him. Shot with restraint and beauty , it’s effective because it puts us in Saroo’s shoes, understanding the dangers through a 5-year-old’s perspective. Playing young Saroo, Pawar’s face is full of expression, both innocent and, eventually, streetwise. The Brierleys are kind, patient, and committed to their children, but the movie doesn’t shy away from the challenges both Saroo and Mantosh face, even as adults. Trauma isn’t something that just goes away because a child is removed from its source.
Not speaking the common language of Bengali, he’s unable to converse with anyone. The movie then jumps forward 20 years to 2008, and Saroo , all grown up, embarks on a course of study in hospitality management. He meets and falls in love with an American girl, Lucy , who is also in the program. The course attracts a number of international students, including Indians, and while at dinner with them one night, Saroo has an experience that resurfaces feelings he’s long buried about his lost family.
As the film opens, tiny Saroo lives with his beloved mother, younger sister, and older brother Guddu , whom he idolizes. His mother is a day laborer, and the family subsists near the edge of poverty. The Academy Award winner, Nicole Kidman is a cinema icon who has shown the ability to transform her physical appearance and mannerisms to immerse herself as characters to elevate the story.
